There are a lot of exciting things that happen in Acts chapter 13. We see the start of the first missionary journey, we hear of Barnabas and Saul traveling across an island sharing the gospel, and we read of a conflict between the apostles and a magician… but there is something else in the chapter, something often overlooked- how involved the Holy Spirit is in the lives of Christ’s people.

Acts 12:20-24 is probably one of those verses we are tempted to read through quickly; maybe even thinking that it has little bearing on us. But this text teaches us at least two things- that God is Sovereign, and that God is to be taken seriously.

I should not be amazed at God’s timing, but I often am. Acts 12:1-19 was what I had scheduled myself to preach at the end of last year, I had no idea that I would be preaching it at a time in my life when I often approached God in tears and heart ache. I am so very grateful for God’s word, and I am so very grateful that it speaks to us, and into us.

“Christian;” It’s a word that carries a number of meanings to many people. When it first came about in Antioch it was a word that was meant to be funny, it meant “Little Christ.” This message not only takes a look at the origin of the term, but it also gives a charge to those that bear that name.

Why would there ever be backlash over someone coming to trust in Christ Jesus? There were early Christians who did not yet understand what Christ achieved on the cross. Some of those misunderstandings had to do with diet, and that spilled over in to how they thought of people from other races.

Acts 10 is the story of two conversions, Peter and Cornelius. Cornelius’ conversion teaches us that without Christ, goodness means nothing.

If you are a Christian, those who are closest to you should see Christ in you… so should your employer, so should your government, so should your enemies. The indwelling of Christ, the imprint of Christ, is typical for every saint, every disciple of Christ.

Saul’s conversion in Acts 9 teaches us what to expect in conversion- not necessarily a blinding light, an audible voice, or blindness- but our meeting Christ, being brought into community, and even suffering because of what we are being made in to.

“How can I understand, unless someone guides me?” This is the question the Ethiopian Eunuch asks to Philip… it is a question that comes up in other parts of Scripture as well (Romans 10:13ff), how does someone go from dead to alive, from cut off to rejoicing, unless someone actively serves as a guide.
