God’s design and desire for the church (those for whom Christ died) is their preservation. One of the weapons in His arsenal then is the Overseer. This farewell to the Ephesian elders in Acts 20 gives us a great look into what the Overseer should do and be.

“What will you do with your life?” It’s a question I have asked, and been asked, since early on in life. The call of the Christian is to lay it down in service of Christ. Acts 20: 17-38 shows us Paul, eager to make it to Jerusalem, stopping along the way to meet with elders of the church at Ephesus to say a few parting words. Those words are essentially Paul’s answer to that question.

Our story in Acts 19:11-20 starts out with some extraordinary miracles… those acts of God lead us to thinking about living extraordinary lives in response to God’s grace. This text is a call to greater intimacy with Jesus.

When it comes to God’s word and to our beliefs, we should want to be as right as possible. Acts 19:1-10 shows Paul finding disciples who were unclear on a number of essential beliefs that had everything to do with their salvation. The good news is that the disciples listened to what Paul had to show them from the scriptures. (A Portion of this recording was lost due to a power outage.)

The call to follow Christ is a call to both being His disciple, and making more disciples. The relationship shown to us of Priscilla, Aquila, and Apollos, is a good example for us to see how we are to be involved in discipleship.

There are many times when we are tempted to ignore the command of Christ- “So let your light shine to all men.” It may be because we are tempted to be swallowed up in frustration, or because we succumb to fear. Acts 18:1-17 shows Jesus encouraging Paul to “Go on, keep speaking.” This text should encourage those of us who are tempted to, borrowing words from the song, hide our lights under a bushel.

Why would the Apostle Paul be angry at a city full of idols? Is idolatry really that bad if it doesn’t hurt anyone? Is idolatry still a problem? Acts 17:16-34 is our text for this study entitled, “No Time to Waste.”

A brief overview might lead us to believe that Acts 17:1-15 is just a tale of two cities with one obvious role model. But this text sets an example for us in our treatment of scripture- the Word of God.

Something that has captivated me since I was a child was knowing the Paul and Silas sang hymns to God at midnight while bloodied and in bonds. This message teaches us why they sang, and why it is so important for us to sing as well.
